Suicide in the LGBT Community:

Research and Health Care Perspectives 2009

Tuesday  March 24, 2009   7:00-9:00 PM

Next Tuesday The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Institute (SOGI) in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will present a forum on current research and clinical perspectives on suicide in the LGBT community.

Researchers will discuss their work on suicidality,  focusing on youth and women in our community.  Health care providers and public health officials will provide commentary on the research,   and share observations from their work with LGBT youth,  older adults and suicide survivors.  Community participants will have the opportunity to dialogue with the presenters and provide their perspectives.

Panelists for the evening include:

Dennis Beauchamp, LCSW Clinician,  supervisor and manager at CJE SeniorLife,  Member of the Chicago Task Force on LGBT Aging

Robert Garofalo MD, MPH Director of Adolescent HIV Services at Children’s Memorial Hospital,  Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University,  Deputy Director of Howard Brown Health Center

Tonda Hughes, Ph.D., RN, FAAN Professor in Nursing and Public Health at UIC,  Director of Research for the UIC National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health

G. Simone Koehlinger, Psy.D. Director of the Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Health at the Chicago Department of Public Health

Valerie Newman, MA, ATR, LPC Youth Program Clinical Supervisor at the Center on Halsted

Laura Szalacha, Ph.D. Assistant Professor in the UIC College of Nursing

Edmond Yomtoob, Psy.D. President of the Illinois Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention,  Private practice serving the LGBT community

This event will be held in the Hoover-Leppen Theater at the Center on Halsted.  It is free and open to the public.  No reservations are required.
