The Burden of Childhood Sexual Abuse

I write and talk a lot about the impact of trauma such as sexual abuse on the developing child as well as on into adulthood. It can be challenging to find words enough to convey the pervasive, devastating effects. Sometimes clients struggle with understanding just why some area of their adult life is affected by prior abuse.

Psychological effects are likely to be most severe if the trauma is:

  • Human caused
  • Repeated
  • Unpredictable
  • Multifaceted
  • Sadistic
  • Undergone in childhood
  • Perpetrated by a caregiver

Childhood sexual abuse often includes many if not all of these characteristics.

This video, The Burden, illustrates it far better than my words alone can. If you are a survivor of childhood sexual abuse you may find viewing this video triggering, so exercise good self-care. You may also resonate.

“Sexual abuse can be a heavy burden for a child.”

*sigh* It is very difficult to carry around this shut down part of you inside…a part of you that no one else can see and that keeps you from being/doing all you could.

  2. So very accurate. Sometimes that extra weight is actually carried on the body as well as in the mind and heart of the survivor. It can color your entire outlook and life. Thanks for sharing this.

  3. I didn’t listen to the warning…wow, very powerful. I’m going to put it on my site too, thanks for sharing

  4. What happens to a child when they have been raped and abused all thier life then when they finally find the strength to speak out and ask for help, they are not believed and the Police refuse to charge the rapist?

How on earth must that child feel?

Wow, very powerful. I am not a victim of childhood sexual assault and to me that looks like a kid carrying around the dead part of himself with him. I hope that is not offensive to anyone, I certainly do not mean it to be, that’s just what it looks like to me. Heartbreaking.

That video is amazing… thankyou for posting it.

I’m currently doing a bit of a one-woman campaign on spreading awareness of the effects of sexual abuse on a child, I may use this video as you’re right: it does sum it up etter than words ever could
